A little September poetry book

A little September poetry book
With complete poems and a host of excerpts
Inspired by Jacqueline Woodson's verse memoir

Here are a sample of our student memoir poems:

1st Hour winner: “2018 Jr. Market Sale”

Aimee Shults with her pig
That weighs 283 pounds.

People start bidding
Cell phones ringing
All I can hear around me
As tears roll down my face
Thinking why this?

The numbers going,
Up and up
Those words
Those heartbreaking words
SOLD to number 38.

Shaking their hands
Crying and thinking
Why this?

I’ll never see her again
This is the last day
Of her life.

When I left the barn
It was sad and hard
But I knew it was the right thing to do.
-Aimee Shults

2nd Hour Winner: “Spring Days”
I went out for a walk one day.
The sky was clear and blue.
I saw a blue jay in a tree,
But then away it flew.
She must be flying wild and free,
Something I wish I could do.
I watched her soar into the sky,
And then, her friends joined too.

I continued down the narrow path,
And saw a baby fox.
She trotted by and disappeared
Behind a group of rocks.
She me up with her family,
They all had on white socks.

I headed toward the river,
The water was so clear
The water flows so freely
All throughout the year.
I dipped my toes into the water
And fell down on my rear!

I laughed and screamed and jumped back out,
As the cold water caught me by surprise.
Oh, these spring days are always fun,
This feeling never dies.
-Aaliyah Castillo

3rd hour Winner
Bubbles rise from the river depth
Fore lock floats at the river’s surface
The kelpies eyes resurface
Its eyes gold and unblinking
Teeth thick and exposing
Mouth closing
Nostrils flaring.
-Byrnley Barton

As the boat started to zoom across the water,
I could feel myself rock like a teeter-totter.

After many times I fell and failed,
I stopped, took a breath, and then exhaled.
-Rhiwan

We used to have a dog named Dexter.
His barks were like lullabies during a storm,
Dexter and Patch had little adventures
Every morning. It was great!
-Adison

No honeysuckle smell
Just wanting to yell,
I usually go outside
Or watch tv inside…
-Will

The day was a hot, sweaty one,
As the breeze cooled the stands,
The handler sent the dog out to the field,
Then there goes the dog going like 50 mph!
-Mason

The dogs start barking and my mom shushes them…
I went off trail and started twisting around trees
-Charlie

Dogs running fast through the tunnel
Trainers shouting out what to do
Fast through the tunnel twist
Rattle and shake, then they po through.
-Cooper

The sun came up over the mountains.
And is snowing, fogging.  The snow
Is to my window.  The fog si so thick.
-Skylar

Darkness
It’s all she sees
Darkness,
It’s all she understands
Darkness

Cold
It’s all she feels
Cold
It’s all she comprehends
Cold
-Elissa

I climb
Into the empty, gaping seat
Pull the safety restraint
Down snug on my chest
Feel
The G-Force flattening my
Body as the coaster shoots me…
-Montey
…I smell, I see, I hear, I feel
The many years of memories in the cards.
The old dusty pictures full of memories.
-Jackson

The sun shining.
Stepping on the boats
Driving by a cliff
To see a mountain goat…
-Finley

We won our first football game on Saturday, Hooray!
The first play of the game our team scored
A touchdown on the first play of the game,
Touchdown, yeah!
-Tyler

It was the first day
I ever jumped my bike
I started way back
Then I went for it
Bang, crash, smack
I crashed.
-Dawson

“Look, it’s climbing,” I say as we headed outside
I stand by the glass with plenty of pride
That I saw my favorite animal.
It was a Panda.
-Sam

It’s like the tree is waving to me.
The wind is soft, calm.
The sun is almost blinding…
Elk casually eating in a field….
Sound of a river running.
Nice and calm.
-Annalyse

Mexico
The part I went to of Mexico was in the middle and that was Aguascalientes.
I got to meet my grandma and aunts…A lot of fun stuff…going to a wedding, getting to watch Jumanji at the theater, and watch my sister and cousin
Fight over boy’s blue underwear. My adventure…
-Roxanna

The lightning woke me up in a flash.
The thunder scared me away
With a roll as a clash.
-Rebecca

Part II of Dexter the Dog
Mom and Ainsley crying
And dad on the four-wheeler digging
A grave…
We were the luckiest people on Earth
-Adison

Woodson was looking out the window,
As the rain drizzled down the window.
Then the sidewalk grew grayer and wetter,
As she also grew border and border.
-Bow

Disallowed:
Bacon is red
Bacon is rough.
One piece of bacon
Is never enough.
